Keeping Your Animal Safe At The Groomers
It is important that your pet is groomed regularly for his or her mental health and physical health. Beginning the grooming experience with your pet when he or she is still young is a great way for you to ensure the act appropriately when they are older at the groomers. Show your pet that the grooming experience can be fun and will not be painful. Animals need to be reassured that there is no reason to be scared. Frequently brush your puppy or kitten, play with his or her feet so they will not be afraid when it comes time to trim their nails, bathe them every six weeks or so to make the experience less scary to them. The bathing might take some time to get them used to, so you can start by just wetting them down. Praise your pet frequently and always use a calm tone when speaking to them.
If you have decided that you prefer to have a professional groom your animal instead of doing it yourself, you might be saving yourself from a few unnecessary headaches. However, just as you would check into a daycare before you put your child in the are of a stranger, you need to check into a groomer before you leave your pet for the day.
Start your search by asking friends and family members the name of the groomer they use. From here you can make an appointment to view the groomers pet salon. Look around for sign of unsanitary conditions. For example, if you do not see an animal being dried, this generally indicates the dog is completely done with its grooming experience, therefore the floors should be swept and free of any hair. It can take a few hours for an animal to dry completely after being bathed, therefore the groomer had ample time to clean and sanitize the area. You should look in the tub, there should be no fur left straggling around. Combs, brushes and scissors should all be free of fur. The clippers should not have any blood on them, the same goes for the scissors.
Take a look at the area the animals are kept in after they have been groomed. This area should also be clean and free of dirt and fur. There should be a towel or blanket in with the animal for comfort, there should be clean water available for the animals. Look at even the empty kennels, they should be clean, with no feces, hair or urine in them. This should all be cleaned immediately, especially during the daytime hours.
If you suspect the grooming facility is unsanitary, you can contact your veterinarian and he or she will assist in helping you take the proper steps. It is important that you check into a facility before you leave your animals there. If you would not feel comfortable leaving your child with this particular person, do not leave your animal. When you go back to pick up your pet watch how he or she interacts with the groomer. If your animal seems to be very intimidated and scared of the groomer, do not bring our pet back. It is important that your pet feels comfortable with the person that is grooming them.
