Sod Turf

Sod is the surface layer of the earth that contains grasses and plants that have intertwined roots also known as turf. Installing a sod turf lawn has advantages. With minimal maintenance, they will add curb appeal and value to your house. A sod turf lawn also aids in keeping your house cool in summer and provides natural firebreaks. Lawns do not use as much water as other trees and shrubbery.

Sod or turf, usually is a reference to lawns being areas of grass that have been planted for recreation or ornamental purposes. It is also planted to prevent soil erosion. Turf can sometimes mean artificial turf, which is a fabricated product that is manufactured by using synthetic materials. It gives the appearance of natural grass. Another definition of turf is a slang word meaning the territory, which is claimed by a gang. It can also mean a product called peat that is used for fuel.

To plan and design your lawn can be fun and easy. To accomplish this you just need to follow a few simple steps. Plan and measure the area that you want to establish your lawn. Prepare the ground by removing rocks and debris. Till the soil and mix in a high phosphorus fertilizer, then rake the area level smooth being sure that its slopes away from houses or buildings. Now you are ready to order your sod. Upon delivery, you should be ready to start laying it on your prepared soil. Water the soil before laying the strips of sod or turf to ensure good contact. After placing the strips of sod turf, water it thoroughly with in an hour.

Normally, sod or turf that is used for lawns is started on specialty farms. These farms can be found locally because a long transport would cause excessive drying and heat buildup that is not conducive to a quality product. The sod farms have acres and acres of land, where they can grow many varieties of grass at the same time.

After the hard work of the initial installation of your sod, there will be minimal maintenance to keep it in great shape. During the first two weeks after planting it will need to be watered daily. After that, the watering can be less frequent. After about six weeks your lawn should be well established. When the blades of grass reach two to three inches you can start mowing. Apply fertilizer about every 60 days. Fertilizers will keep your lawn healthy and rich looking. At this point, all it needs is water, mowing, and fertilizer. Once in awhile, you may want to rent and use an aerator. This will break up compacted sod turf and enhance root growth.
