Bedding Sets

The Pharaohs were the first to move their beds, up and away from the ground. Hierarchy Romans also decorated their beds with precious metals and gold. They also had a mattress, stuffed out with feathers, or wool. Even grasses were used. During the Renaissance, these mattresses were covered with luxurious fabrics, like velvets, silks and satins. In the twentieth century we have all kinds of beds: Water beds, futons, even air beds! All manner of shapes, sizes and styles! Which style of bedding you choose is important. Bedding sets are available, to decorate and provide comfort and warmth. They are the all round solution and often work out more economical to buy than purchasing individual bed sheets and duvet covers. To make sure you purchase the right bed set, for your particular style of bed, knowing the terminology is a must!

Valance

Also referred to as a ruffle or skirt. This is a purely decorative sheet which is placed between the mattress and the box base of the bed. A valance covers unsightly bases, drawers and the legs of the bed. 'Bed Spreads' are sheets which cover the mattress and the base of the bed. They may even have a Valance attached to them. If the set refers to the 'Drop', it is stating the length of the Valance. Very important as bed bases can vary quite dramatically.

Comforters & Duvet Covers

When purchasing a comforter, it's a good idea to note the warranty. A good indication of the product's quality. A comforter is a quilted bed cover, feather filled are often considered the best kind. Pricing is determined by the quality of the filling, not it's weight. Duvet Covers are used to protect comforters and add style. Covers are considered essential for feather down comforters, and standard sizing is often used by all the manufacturers. Check the sizing, but usually there will be something available. Some covers are left open, but most are either button up or will have ties.

Pillow Shams

These are much more decorative than regular pillow cases. Regular covers are essential to protect the pillows you sleep on. Keeping them clean and reducing dust. Pillow Shams are usually placed behind your regular sleeping pillows, and can have all sorts of decorative trimmings. Also referred to as Flanged. A European Sham is much larger.

There are lots of bedding sets available, with different items included. When you are deciding on a bedding set, make sure every piece included, not only fits your particular shape and sized bed, but none of the pieces are faulty. Elasticised edges fit around a mattress better than corners. Check for problems along the seams and small tight stitching will wear best. If choosing darker fabrics, think about quality. Dark colours of poor quality fade dramatically and quickly.
